The short answer: did much change?
Two kinds of change. Among delegations present at both meetings, most national positions held steady — so a side-by-side read feels stable. The real movement is (1) a handful of pointed position shifts among the regulars, and (2) a wave of new arrivals in May, including the entire skeptical bloc that was absent in March.
The cast changed — who showed up in May
The single biggest March→May difference is not delegations moving, but who took the floor. The negotiating blocs and the skeptical voices arrive in May.
Spoke in March only
Individual delegations that registered a March position but did not appear (by name) in the May public readout. Many are folded into bloc statements (G77/China, African Group, EU) by May.
New in May
Delegations and blocs that appear in May but had no recorded March position. Red = skeptical bloc, none of which was on the record in March.
Stance distribution — March vs May
Counts every delegation coded at each meeting (March: plotted delegations only, excluding inaudible Saudi Arabia & China). Shows how the centre of gravity shifts as the skeptical bloc arrives.
Position drift table — delegations present at both meetings
The honest core of the comparison: only delegations coded at both meetings, with each fault-line axis shown March → May. Changed cells are highlighted. Movement is classified per delegation. This is computed from the two readouts' data, not hand-asserted.
| Delegation | Stance | Finance-link | Subjectivity | Governance | Movement |
|---|
How "movement" is classified. Only changes between two stated positions count as directional. Hardened = shifted toward skeptical/resist. Warmed = shifted toward supportive/welcome. Mixed = changes in both directions. Newly stated = stated a position on an axis it left silent in March (e.g. finance-link). Restated only = the only change is a stated position dropping to silent — not a substantive shift. Stable = no coded change.
Method & data isolation
- Two isolated datasets. March positions come only from the 4 March readout; May positions only from the 7 May readout. Each was coded from its own transcript. This page never infers one meeting's position from the other.
- Comparison, not bleed. The shared element is the coding schema (the four fault-line axes and bloc colours) — deliberately identical so the two meetings are comparable. The stance values themselves are kept separate.
- Overlap = name match. A delegation counts as "present at both" only when the same country/group is coded in both readouts. Bloc-level May entries (G77/China, African Group, EU, AOSIS, CANS) have no single-country March equivalent and are treated as new entrants, not drift.
- Inaudible exclusions. Saudi Arabia and China were inaudible in March (podium audio fault) — no March position on record, so they are excluded from drift. China's May position is therefore a new entry, not a measured shift.
- Silent ≠ position. "Silent" means no explicit position recorded on that axis at that meeting. A silent→stated change is shown as drift only where the underlying statements support it.
